1999-2002 Seat Ibiza Car Review

Overall Rating 4 Stars
Description
Ibiza is essentially Polo plus Spanish attitude. It's bigger, sportier looking and more fun to drive. It's reliable, economical and well built, too. Great news for bargain hunters.

Road Test
Third generation Ibiza is big for a supermini (it's six inches longer than Polo) but too compact to compete on equal terms with Golf or Focus. It's excellent value provided you avoid the basic 1.4 and 1.9 SDi. Engines are from VW. As in Polo, the 60bhp 1.4 is merely adequate. The 1.9 SDi is slow but sips fuel - 55mpg if you're sensible; TDi turbodiesels are much livelier and no thirstier. Pick of the bunch are the 1.6, with its attractive Sport equipment, and the rally-proven 1.8 20v Cupra - a big boys' toy which can mix it with more expensive sports hatchbacks. Handling is assured and safe; sports models have uprated suspension. Even without the tweaks, ride is on the hard side of firm, with noticeable road noise. The cabin seats four adults in comfort and feels well put together even if materials aren't quite up to VW's highest standards.
Positive Points
  • As good as Polo but cheaper
  • 1.8 20v is a true hot hatch
  • Solid and reliable thanks to Volkswagen input
Negative Points
  • SEAT badge still lacks kudos
  • Dull old 1.9 SDi engine
  • 1.4 feels stodgy and underpowered
